Long before I started Steak Me Out I’d ventured to the Newmarket hotel. It was a Wednesday and their cellar bar had just opened, Matt Preston, Marco Pierre White and Iain Hewitson were there, and while it didn’t make too much of a difference on the quality of the food, it made the night a little special.

With my impending move to Sydney, I was chasing that feeling one last time and ventured back. Walking in it all looked the same; the outfitting just as lovely, the dim lighting, rustic but chic architecture and the aroma of spices through the air.


I have to apologize in advance for the photos, I forgot the SD card for my camera in the computer and had to borrow my sister’s iPhone.

After a small, albeit violent, discussion with my family as to what to order, we settled on a number of various things.

For myself as a starter I go the wood barbequed corn, a fish taco and a bone marrow taco.

For the mains we decided to all order one thing and split them. I got the steak, a grass fed rib eye cooked medium (because my family are heathens and don’t eat steak right), the roast chicken, st. Louis cut pork rib and the pan grilled hapuka fillet.

To go with the never ending list of mains we also ordered some potatoes and a quinoa salad.


Soon after ordering the corn came out, and it was a bad start. Completely lack lustered, barely barbequed and smothered with a “sauce” which did nothing to help the dish. Definitely not worth $9.


The tacos on the other hand were great. The marrow was roasted well and came with a slow cooked wagyu brisket, together it was heart stoppingly rich but utterly divine, you couldn’t stop eating.

The fish was equally as fantastic if not better. Flakey fish topped with a crunchy sweet coleslaw all drizzled in a tangy jalapeño mayo to tie it all together. Perfect.


The mains came all at once, and coupled with a small table it was challenging. I’ll start with the steak, I ordered it medium so my sister and mum would eat it however it came out medium rare to rare.


Now I wasn’t annoyed, a rib eye medium rare is my bread and butter, but I need to rate based on what I’ve ordered. Aside from the cooking, the flavour was good but lacked any sort of wow factor. It was a steak you would’ve gotten for cheap at a pub. The tenderness was the same, the dry aging did it no favours either.


The rest of the mains were exquisite. The fish was out of control, the sauce, coupled with the fish and various types of seafood created a creamy and delicious flavour combination.


The chicken, a standout, all elements working harmoniously, the sauce, topping, bacon, grapes and lentils making it a pleasure to eat. The only complaint was the breast being slightly dry.


Lastly the Rib, unbelievably soft with a homemade BBQ sauce made using the slightest bit of tamarind tang with peanuts to add a textural crunch. Once again my only minor complaint is that it needed a tiny bit of chilli to hit the palate and break up the sweetness.

While the overall experience didn’t stack up to what it was, most of the food was still top quality. With the exception of the steak and corn everything was enjoyable and definitely worth returning for.

I went to the Noble Experiment with intrigue and excitement. I knew from the beginning I was ordering a majority of the menu (because it looked so good) and I invited several people to accomplish it.

I ordered everything and told them to stagger it however they feel it should be done. In no particular order, baked Cauliflower, fried Brussel sprouts, Beef short rib, 12 hour slow roasted lamb shoulder, twice cooked pork cheek and the wagyu tartare. I also opted for a steak to finish; the wagyu 7+ hanger rare for my main, served with aloit potatoes and a fantastic sounding whisky and wine jus.

The tartare, Brussel sprouts and lamb shoulder came out in the first round.

I first started with the brussel sprouts, and I will never eat them any other way. Sweet, slightly salted, and crisp. Amazing little morsels of goodness.
Next up the lamb; it was soft and flakey with a good mix of flavours, served along with an incredible jus that made it even better.

The tartare was good but had a weird texture and was served in a way I’d never seen, and didn’t really like. This was probably my least favourite dish of the night.


The second round included the rib, pork cheek and some chips we ordered.

First off I tried the rib and it was one of, if not the best rib dish I’ve had. I have nothing negative to say about it. It was the beat dish of the night.


Pork cheeks were epic, soft and crispy with a chilli hit, cooled with some mayo on the bottom of each piece.

Last out to share was the chefs specialty: the beer and cheese baked Cauliflower. It was great, a whole head of cauliflower baked and served with a cheesy beer sauce. The top also had a real nice crunch to it.

My steak came out last, and it looked good but the plate was missing a colour to break up the white potatoes next to the charred steak.

It was perfectly balanced, and an all-round eating pleasure. The flavour was that of a well-seasoned, charred piece of buttery beef. It had a fantastic texture, flakey and somewhat creamy, and tender to match. It was cooked to a rare medium, which after cutting and seeing a significant amount of marbling (more than I expected), turned out to be better than rare, as more fat melted into it.

The sauce was also great and went with the peppery cheesy mash amazingly.

Lastly to cap off the night we ordered once of every dessert.


A chocolate spiced cake.

A beetroot parfait.

And maple custard with a bacon crumble.

All were amazing.
